Description of the Karsten Method

The Karsten water penetration method determines the water absorption rate of building materials by applying a defined hydraulic pressure—equivalent to approximately 10 cm water head—onto the test surface. This pressure simulates driving rain conditions on facades, allowing for assessment of a material’s resistance to water penetration under realistic environmental stresses.

Reference values for interpreting the results are based on extensive field experience and the standards DIN 4117 (for hydrophobic waterproofing and sealing mortars or plasters) and DIN 1048 (for waterproof concrete performance). The procedure involves recording the water level drop within a calibrated glass tube attached to a dome sealed to the surface. The measured rate is typically expressed in ml per minute per 3 cm² test area.

Areas of Use

This test kit is a valuable tool for professionals involved in surface protection, moisture control, and waterproofing applications, enabling reliable evaluation of material performance in situ:
  • Evaluating water permeability of facades, mortar joints, and rendered surfaces.
  • Verifying the effectiveness of hydrophobic treatments and impregnations on masonry, concrete, and stone.
  • Assessing moisture resistance of new or existing construction components.
  • Supporting acceptance testing of waterproofing measures.
  • Diagnosing moisture-related damage in construction investigations.

Description of the Test Kit

The kit includes all components required for standardized field or laboratory testing:
  • 6 calibrated glass Karsten tubes (graduated 0–4 ml). 3 tubes designed for vertical surfaces (walls), 3 tubes for horizontal surfaces (floors):
  • 1 refill bottle for precise filling.
  • 2 plastelline compounds (blue for brick and masonry, green for concrete) ensuring watertight seals.
  • 1 crack gauge for measuring existing cracks
  • 1 pencil for marking measurement points.
  • 1 comprehensive user manual with detailed procedures and reference values according to field experience and DIN standards.
  • All components housed in a durable, padded carrying case for safe and organized transport.
